came from.
We were.
So, in case you were wondering, why Wofford is called the Terriers or when the
Blue Devils nickname started at Duke, here’s a quick primer on the mascot
origins for the eight teams playing first-round NCAA Tournament games in
Jacksonville.
**Duke Blue Devils: **According to goduke.com, the Blue Devil was selected as
the school mascot in 1923 by the student newspaper, the Trinity Chronicle. It
originated from a nickname, “les Diables Bleus,” for a group of French
soldiers in World War I. At the time of the selection, which was meant to
highlight the school’s colors of dark blue and white, many of the student body
were returning veterans and the name needed no explanation.
**Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions:** According to uapblionsroar.com, the
Golden Lion was chosen as the school mascot in 1928. UAPB student Raymond
“DeDe” Johnson suggested the lion, which defeated the owl in a voice vote of
the student body.
